About

Public sculpture counts among the more ubiquitous of the artforms. However, it is also its very ubiquity that somehow renders them inconsequential, and eventually relegates them to the corners of public consciousness.

The University of the Philippines’ Diliman campus is in a unique position by being not only one of the most respected educational institutions in the country but as a significant repository of sculptural works that run through the history of art and ideas in the country.  Considering the nature and character of the University, the entire campus can be regarded as a ‘museum’ and these artworks as public art.  As such, this ‘museum’ as Ivan Karp points out, provides us with the space for “confrontation, experimentation and debate”.  In the same manner, these sculptures lend itself a vital role in how ideas and collective memory are shaped, and continuously being re-shaped in the public.

It is hoped that SculpTour would provide us with fresh perspectives and a critical understanding of Philippine history, art, and ideas.
